This map puts three things side by side, state by state: where the data centers are being built, how fast each state's grid operator now expects demand to grow, and what has already happened to household power prices.

What the map shows
- Data-center capacity (MW) — operational, under construction and announced capacity from the Global Energy Monitor tracker. Virginia's "Data Center Alley" still dwarfs every other market.
- Projected demand growth to 2030 — how much peak electricity demand each region's grid operator or utilities now expect to add, largely driven by data centers and electrification.
- Residential price and 5-year change — EIA annual averages. Several of the fastest-growing data-center states have also seen double-digit price increases.
- Grid carbon intensity — EPA eGRID output emission rate, i.e. how "dirty" each new megawatt-hour of demand is.

Where does the data come from?
Residential electricity prices are annual averages from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Data-center counts and capacity are compiled from the Global Energy Monitor Global Data Center Tracker (operational, under construction and announced). Grid carbon intensity is from EPA eGRID. Projected 2024–2030 demand growth is drawn from regional grid-operator (PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP) and state utility resource-plan filings.
Why is AI blamed for rising electricity bills?
Data centers — increasingly built for AI training and inference — are the largest source of new electricity demand on the US grid in decades. Utilities in the fastest-growing states are seeking rate increases to pay for new generation and transmission, and in several markets those costs are spread across all ratepayers.
